Johnny Helm: Bio

Johnny Helm

Here is some information on John's background. Enjoy the reading you little beans.
1973

The U.S. Supreme Court issued Roe v. Wade ruling to legalize abortion. “The Sting” won the Oscar for Best Picture. Pablo Picasso, Bruce Lee and J.R.R. Tolkien died.

And John Helm was born. March 4 in Hartford, CT., to be exact.

His parents and grandparents were all talented musically. His dad was a square dance caller; his grandfather played any instrument he could get his hands on. The women sang and played piano.

Blame John’s grandfather for what has become a passion (and hopefully career) in music for John. Papa, as John called him, gave him his first ukulele and harmonica. His career could’ve taken off from there if only he knew what to do with them.

At Morley Elementary School in West Hartford, CT., John played the snare drum in the school band. He continued in percussion at King Philip Junior High School, where he first heard guitar legends Jerry Garcia and Van Morrison. That changed everything. John ditched the drums and picked up guitar, beginning to sing and write his own songs. At Hall High School, he played In talent shows and sometimes on the streets of Hartford, his first tastes of live performing. While attending the University of Rhode Island, John played in a band called Cat on a Tin Roof, gigging at various clubs in Kingston and Narragansett. The band, with John on lead guitar and vocals, specialized in Grateful Dead covers. After graduating in 1995 with a degree in Wildlife Biology, John started writing songs and playing at open-mic events in The Berkshires, the hills of southwest Massachusetts.

In March 1996 John went to New York City to record some demo tracks; the three-song demo was distributed to some record labels. None responded.

John left Rhode Island for another island –Hawaii—in 1996. He met local radio legend, Wili Moku, who brought him into the studio to record a second session. John recorded two songs, Home and Lady of the Night. John gave up his chemist job to get into radio, interning at Moku’s KQMQ 93.1 FM. He soon realized an interest in what goes on behind the scenes. He met producer and engineer, Darah York, who he shadowed for several months before landing a job as producer for Caribou Broadcasting. He stayed at the studio after hours, determined to learn everything about recording. He began to produce what would be his first full-length demo recording, self-titled with nine songs, while working days at various coffee shops on Oahu. <

A career in radio was inevitable. John was hired to host KKHN 102.7 FM Double K Country’s morning show. That led to the morning DJ job at KPOI 97.5 FM. After work he continued to play at local clubs and bars in Honolulu, picking up a regular gig at Shipley’s in Manoa with pianist Patrick Sweeney, who later became his roommate.

John was introduced to local musician, producer, engineer, Rockwell Fukino in March 2001. He brought John into the studio to record his second full-length recording entitled “At Random.”

At Random was nominated for Rock album of the year in the 2003 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards

Helm supported At Random with with many shows from the club sceene of Honolulu to theatre performances such as "Marks Garage"(it really is a theatre), Contemporary Museum(Honolulu), Bishop Museum and of coarse Coffee Talk Helm's favorite watering hole.

Helm moved to the Big Apple in the summer of 2004 and continued working in coffee shops. He did gigs with Bud Cerio at New York City's famed "Bitterend" as well as some small venues in Norwalk CT. In the winter of 2004/2005 Helm moved to Greenwich CT where he recorded tracks for his upcoming album "Divide" at the old Sweeney Mansion. Pick up "A Patchwork Clan" if you want to read about the musical Sweeney household with 18 children! There are 10 tracks for the upcoming release. It is a collection of recordings from 1996-2006. Helm produced, engineered, mixed and mastered almost the entire cd himself. Additional producing on the project by Grammy award winner John Cruz and international recording and live musician Jeffry Kloetzel. It is currently in Stores and available on this site!

Johnny is five songs deep on his next project. (Below this point on the page is archives of news from my home page)

Johnny Helm

And if your bored. From this point on on this page is the archives from my home page new news. This is all stuff done in the past.

Here lies the News!

Here is some footage from the Gregg Allman show. We opened. The song is called the "Fair Revised" from my first album At Random. I am not going to press any more of that cd.

Here is my video blog for the week/day 5/22/07 depending on how much time I got!

5/4/07 Well I tweaked the studio a bit more. It is coming along nicely. Very small and hot but it will do. I think this next project will be much easier to pull off than Divide. Divide was moved around so much I should have just abandoned it as the costs grew and grew. I am very happy with it but for a home project, it was very costly . I could have gone to a "Real" studio for the amount I spent in redo. I learned alot so I guess it was worth it.

Anyways, I am much more organized and ready for the new project. My plan is to do four or five at home and four or five at studio Kahala. I am not trying to prove anything by doing some of it myself. I enjoy putting the songs together. Each situation draws different creativity. At home I tend to try out more 'quirky' stuff. I can't afford to do that at Studio Kahala so I draw more creativity in the actual performance of my playing and singing. More tommorrow. Please come back

5/2/07 First day of no work and all music. It was sweet. I recently left Visionary Related Entertainment as production director. I am now a full-time self-employed musician. I will probably starve but I could use to lose a few pounds - lol. Check back soon for the video blog. : )

Updated 4-29-07. Thanks to Ernie Cruz Jr., I was able to play 'Staring Up Trees' and 'Breathe' at the 2007 Kokua Festival. What a blast! Thanks to Kim and Jack Johnson who put the amazing event on and allowed me to do a few songs. Ernie was originally invited to the festival then asked me to do a couple with him and his friends. He is the most generous musician I know. Not many people get opportunities to play at events like 'Kokua' and he was willing to share his time with me and my music. Thanks a million Ernie! CHECK ERNIES MUSIC OUT. Jack let me use his guitar for the second show due to pick-up issues on my guitar again.

annas

He is a humble dude and it was refreshing to see someone with that much exposure that mellow and down to earth.

I will be gigging a bunch in Honolulu for the month of May, then I will be off to the west coast for most of June. Check calendar dates.

I have started to record some new material. I will have a better Idea of what it will be towards the end of May. I will be updating the site more regularly as I have much more time now. No, scratch that, my friend Jack will be my webmaster (www.GoJango.com)!

2/21/07 (Updated 3/20/07) Sorry for taking so long to update. Things have been hectic. Johnny has taken a break from being the Production Director for five of Visionary Related Entertainments Honolulu radio stations to focus on album #4. He has already entered the studio for some of the basic tracks. This project should go quicker than Divide because he won't be working at the stations while trying to track at night. He will also be playing six nights a week in Honolulu for the next couple months. Check back soon for more. Johnny opens for Leon Russell on March 2 at the Hawaiian Hut.

The upcountry Maui show from this past Sunday will be rebroadcast Feb 25 on Manao Radio. It will be rebroadcast this coming Sunday Febuary 25th at 4pm Hawaii time. Johnny has some interesting gigs this month check calendar for details. Johnny opened up for 'Gregg Allman and friends' at 'Events at the tower' in Honolulu on Jan 21st 2007.
The show was great (Click on 'BIO' to your left and scroll down to see some video). Three attempts by the battery gods (bad battery in direct box... not the bands fault) to stop the show with a few interuptions of ugly distortion but Johnny and the band continued to rock and put on a GREAT SHOW. Yippee!!!!! There are some great fan shots we will be uploading to the site. The show will be available upon request for download. Just email us at music@johnnyhelm.com and we will send links and instructions for downloading.
